2. Breaking the Code: The digital learning skills students need for success.
Presenter(s):
-
Jack
Holmquest
Lake Area Technical Institute
Instructor
Description:
Students across a wide range of abilities can use computers to boost learning. The trick is to thoroughly engage all students. How do we do that?
This session will provide digital skills to boost student’s reading/remembering ability. (We had Sp Ed students reading at 84% comprehension, using digital skills.)
The session will boost vocabulary skills. Fact it, most standardized tests are about 80% vocab. It’s the “key to the door” of learning. Our classes have gone from D- average on the Simpson vocab tests to 94% average, using computer-enhanced digital skills. We’ll look at a new website called WORDNIK, plus some graphic tactics to boost vocab learning and memory.
Graphic learning: We’ll demonstrate the power of pictures and other graphics in boosting learning. Research says up to 80% of our students are visual, kinesthetic learners. Why not take the easy route to engage them too?
These digital strategies also boost student attention and retention. We can prove it.

3. Bring Your Own Digital Camera and Learn to Use It
Presenter(s):
-
Janet
Caughlin
Douglas County West Public Schools
Teacher/Instructor
Description:
Bring your own laptop and digital camera - The purpose of this workshop is to help educators learn about their own digital camera so they can take great pictures and then pass their skills to their students. The format will be hands on, with individual instruction as needed. Both the instructor and participants will help with questions. The concepts will be taught using slides explaining each concept, instruction to clarify and expand concepts, and participants trying each concept on their cameras.
They will learn about menu choices, shooting modes, viewing pictures on the camera and on their computer, principles of photocomposition, and
demonstration of how to edit pictures using free software: Picasa (Windows) and iPhoto (Macintosh). The workshop will be stress-free with participants feeling comfortable and excited about learning skills they can use with their students and families. Graphic handouts will help in learning concepts during the workshop and with remembering what they learned later on. This workshop will be successful if participants leave feeling comfortable using their cameras to create good photographs so they can pass their skills to their students. Using cameras in the classroom will be a topic that will be discussed throughout the workshop.

Description:
I have been a K-14 educator for 32 years. I realized the power of videos in the classrooms at least 10 years ago when I dabbled with VCR companion, Dazzle, Avid Cinema, and the early imovie. The tools we have available now are phenomenal! I hope you will enjoy using some of the tools with me as we make South Dakota come alive with a video about our state, and man's best friend dogs come alive with a Photostory video!
I will show you some examples with Animoto for a class yearbook as well as Smilebox. Another thing I LOVE is wordle! I make a screen with names and save it as an image to put in my movie. We will also look at saving PowerPoint's as images to make a movie. To top it off, it is SO easy to post Smilebox and Animoto data right on your blog--without going into your blog! I will also show you how to post your video to YouTube! Did you know you have a space on the K-12 data server to post a video and can post a video there? I will show you this, too! Presenter(s):

Dakota State University
Professor
-
Don
Wiken
Dakota State University
Professor
Description:
Curriculum textbook formats tend to be in a pattern. Once you and your students get accustom to the pattern the routine gets boring. The Internet is continually changing and seems to be motivating the students because of the interactive websites and sites which can be within the Zone of Proximity for individual student. But, since the Internet has come into classroom, how does a teacher keep up with the new sites and how can the teacher find the time to explore for those exciting lesson possibilities?
We have been introducing teachers and our students to Thinkfinity. With over 55,000 activities, we have not uncovered all of the rich resources but we are enjoying the exploring. Our university students are continually showing us new sites to strengthen curriculum areas. One feature, that makes the website so user friendly, is the embedded search engine. Participants will be able to see how they can plan curriculum around standards and how to include all curriculum disciplines. The presenters teach in the content of language arts, math, science and social studies. Participants will be able to see what we have discovered. There will be time during the session for the participants to plan activities they can use in their classroom after the conference.
